Progressive overload, explained simply
If you only learn one training principle, make it this one: progressive overload.
It sounds technical, but the idea is simple. To keep getting stronger, you have to gradually ask your body to do a little more than it did last time. Do that consistently and your muscles have no choice but to adapt.
Ways to add a little more
You don’t have to pile on weight every session. You can progress by:
- Adding weight — the classic. A little more on the bar over time.
- Adding reps — same weight, one or two more reps than last week.
- Adding sets — an extra set of quality work.
- Improving technique — cleaner reps, better range of motion, more control.
The key word is gradual
The mistake I see most often is people trying to jump too far, too fast — then stalling or getting hurt. Small, steady steps win. Aim to beat your last session by a tiny margin, again and again.
Nail that, and progress takes care of itself.
